If you have time this weekend, why not take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count?  It's free and only takes a few minutes.  Here is a blurb from their website

"The 2011 GBBC will take place Friday, February 18, through Monday, February 21. Please join us!  The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes on one day, or you can count for as long as you like each day of the event. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds."

If you go to the website above, you can download a checklist of birds in your area.  What a great way to get outside or stay inside if it's still cold where you are.  You can still count them if they come into your yard.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Oh my gosh, I just had a little flicker like that in my yard this week! (well mine was a flicker that could be a woodpecker right? so similar) And we have a lot of goldfinches as well this time of year. I love watching the birds but have never done the bird count.
